چکیده

We have developed tools for analysis of 3-D volumetric data which allow sensitive characterizations of point clouds containing filamentary structures. Our approach involves multiscale X-ray transforms of the data volume. The idea is that cubes of all different locations and scales are extracted from the data volume and then analyzed by integrating along lines (X-Rays) of all different orientations and scales. The underlying principle is that point clouds with different amounts of filamentarity will lead to different distributions for the X-ray coefficients when viewed at the right scale. The multiscale approach guarantees that information from all scales is available; by extracting the information from the transform in a statistically appropriate fashion, we can sensitively resolve differences in details of the filamentarity. We will describe the algorithm and the results of comparing different simulated galaxy distributions.

Some recent advances in multiscale geometric analysis of point clouds

We discuss recent work based on multiscale geometric analysis for the study of large data sets that lie in high-dimensional spaces but have low-dimensional structure. We present three applications: the first one to the estimation of intrinsic dimension of sampled manifolds, the second one to the construction of multiscale dictionaries, called geometric wavelets, for the analysis of point clouds...

Robust Classification of MR Brain Images Based on Multiscale Geometric Analysis

The widely used feature representation scheme for magnetic resonance (MR) image classification based on low-frequency subband (LFS) coefficients of wavelet transform (WT) is ineffective in presence of common MR imaging (MRI) artifacts (small rotation, low dynamic range etc.). The directional information present in the high-frequency subbands (HFSs) can be used to improve the performance. Moreov...

Multiscale Geometric Methods for Estimating Intrinsic Dimension

We present a novel approach for estimating the intrinsic dimension of certain point clouds: we assume that the points are sampled from a manifold M of dimension k, with k << D, and corrupted by D-dimensional noise. When M is linear, one may analyze this situation by PCA: with no noise one would obtain a rank k matrix, and noise may be treated as a perturbation of the covariance matrix. WhenM is...

Multiscale Geometric Dictionaries for Point-cloud Data

We develop a novel geometric multiresolution analysis for analyzing intrinsically low dimensional point clouds in high-dimensional spaces, modeled as samples from a d-dimensional set M (in particular, a manifold) embedded in R, in the regime d D. This type of situation has been recognized as important in various applications, such as the analysis of sounds, images, and gene arrays. In this pape...

Image Quality Assessment - A Multiscale Geometric Analysis-Based Framework and Examples

This chapter is about objective image quality assessment (IQA), which has been recognized as an effective and efficient way to predict the visual quality of distorted images. Basically, IQA has three different dependent degrees on original images, namely, full-reference (FR), noreference (NR), and reduced-reference (RR). To begin with, the fundamentals of IQA are introduced and a broad treatmen...
